In 1906, Reginald Fessenden transmitted the first radio broadcast; consisting of a poetry reading, a violin solo, and a speech. In 1851, the U.S. Library of Congress experienced its worst fire, which destroyed 35,000 books, about two-thirds of the Library’s collection. In 1818, “Silent Night” was composed by Franz Joseph Gruber and first sung the next day. And in 1777, Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, was discovered by James Cook.
